Patients may be referred for physical therapy or manual therapy after the injection while the numbing medicine is effective and/or over the next several weeks while the cortisone is working. On the day after the procedure, patients may return to their regular activities.

Pain and inflammation in the hip joint(s) are the main reason that doctors prescribe steroid injections. A steroid injection contains two main ingredients. The first is a steroid (cortisone) that helps reduce inflammation. The second is a numbing agent or anesthetic that reduces pain.

You may notice reduced pain 15 to 20 minutes after the injection. Pain may return in 4 to 6 hours as the numbing medicine wears off. As the steroid medicine begins to take affect 2 to 7 days later, your hip joint should feel less painful.

- If you have an active infection and are taking antibiotics, the medication course must be complete prior to the procedure.
- Inform us if you are or may be pregnant, or have allergies to medications or x-ray dye (contrast).
- Arrive 15 minutes early to complete registration.
Can I drive after a hip injection?
You may not drive for 12 hours after your injection. It is common to experience mild soreness at the injection site(s) for 24–48 hours. Ice is the best remedy. You may apply ice for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day, as needed.
Can you drive home after hip injection?
Your driver must remain on site during the procedure. If you do not require an assistive device, you may drive yourself home.
