Can you hand stitch stretchy fabric?
So we know from my topstitching knits tutorial a few weeks ago, that when you’re sewing with knits it’s very important to use stitches that stretch. It’s pretty rare that you’ll need to hand stitch a knit fabric as they’re a more casual fabric.
What hand stitch should I use for stretchy material?
The zigzag stitch is stretchy, durable, and nice to look at, making it very versatile in nature. Most sewing machines have a zigzag setting, but the zigzag stitch can also be worked easily enough by hand.
Can you hand sew spandex?
It’s an ideal fabric for the aforementioned projects, but that same stretchiness can make the material tricky to work with. Like any knit fabric, spandex is more manageable if you own a serger, but you can definitely sew spandex on a regular sewing machine — especially if you have these tips on-hand.
Can I sew knits without a serger?

What is the difference between a ballpoint needle and a stretch needle?
Stretch – Stretch needles have a slightly less rounded point than ballpoint needles and a specially designed eye and scarf that prevents skipped stitches. Use a stretch needle for highly elastic fabrics like spandex and lycra.
What setting should I sew stretchy fabric on?
The best stitches to use for sewing stretch fabrics are:
- Narrow zigzag: opt for a very narrow setting with the zigzag, with the stitch length equal to the stitch width.
- Overedge stitch: a specialty stitch that locks over the edge of the fabric so it stitches and finishes a seam in one pass.
What is the best stitch for spandex?
Stitch Options My preferred stitch for sewing Spandex seams is the basic zig-zag stitch. Don’t use a straight stitch as it will probably break the first time you wear the leotard or swimwear. Just set it to a narrow width stitch. Try on a scrap of fabric (folded double), a width of 0.5 – 1.0 and a length of 3.0.
How do you finish seams on stretch fabric?
A zigzag stitch is a great way to seam knit fabrics. Its inherent stretch allows for the fabric to stretch and move without fear of popping a seam. On light to medium weight knits, try using a stitch length of 1.5 and a width of 5. This setting closely mimics the look and function of an overlock stitch.
How do you stabilize stretch fabric?
To stabilize the seam, simply sew some non-stretch ribbon or stay-tape into the seam as you sew it. Knits will need to be hemmed differently than wovens because you’ll be needing an element of stretch to the seam. This unfortunately means that a regular straight stitch is off the menu!
