Does AT fiber need a modem?
Yes. For fiber internet, you need a modem to connect your house to the internet. For fiber internet, this is the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) that the AT technician will install in your home. You’ll also need a Wi-Fi gateway that creates the home network for your devices to connect to.
Can I replace AT fiber modem with my own?
Yes, you can use your own router with AT Fiber but you need to use the gateway provided by AT. As long as you’re connected to the AT gateway through a switch or WAP, you can use your router with AT Fiber.

Can I use my own modem with ATT UVerse?
AT requires you to use their gateway for their fiber service. You can disable the router portion (pass through mode) and connect a much better router to it. There is also a way to use your own modem but AT will still charge you the monthly fee regardless of what you do once you signup for the service.
Will AT give me a new router?

Lost or stolen equipment may be replaced at the market rate. If damaged or destroyed by any other cause, it may also be replaced.
Can I use my own modem for ATT UVerse?
You may place your own equipment behind the provided ATT gateway… the gateway and monthly fee are part of the service you agree to per the Terms Of Service (TOS) agreement.

To access the internet, you have two options: rent a router through AT, or purchase your own AT-compatible router. With DSL service, you have to use an AT modem no matter what, according to the service agreement.
What is the difference between AT fiber and uverse?
Uverse is the name of ATT’s fiber optic network that consists of TV, Internet and phone. ATT also has DSL internet service but that is being phased out and those customers are being transitioned to Uverse when possible.
