What Dermatome is C6?
What Dermatome is C6?
The C6 dermatome covers the thumb side of the hand and forearm. C7 helps control the triceps (the large muscle on the back of the arm that straightens the elbow) and wrist extensor muscles. The C7 dermatome goes down the back of the arm and into the middle finger.
What is C6 radiculopathy?
C6 Radiculopathy – C6 patients may experience pain or weakness from the neck along the arm, including the biceps, wrists, thumb, and index finger. C7 Radiculopathy – C7 radiculopathy is the most common and sufferers report pain or weakness from the neck to the hand, including the triceps and the middle finger.
What causes C6 radiculopathy?
The most common causes of cervical radiculopathy are when a nerve root becomes inflamed or damaged due to a nearby bone spur or cervical herniated disc, such as from spinal degeneration over time or an injury. Many other less common causes of cervical radiculopathy are possible, such as infection or tumor.
What nerves are affected by C6?
The C6-C7 disc is 6th cervical disc near the lower part of the neck, near the top of the shoulders. The nerve root that would be affected by the C6-C7 disc herniation controls the arms, the shoulders, the heart, the lungs, and more.
What does C6 control?
Cervical nerve 6 controls the extensor muscles of your wrist and is involved in the control of your biceps. C6 provides sensation to the thumb side of your forearm and hand.
How is C6 radiculopathy treated?
Cervical Radiculopathy Treatments
- Medications: These may include corticosteroids (powerful anti-inflammatory drugs) or nonsteroidal pain medication like ibuprofen or naproxen.
- Physical therapy: This might include gentle cervical traction and mobilization, exercises, and other modalities to reduce pain.

What does C6 nerve control?
What muscles are innervated at C6?
The C6 nerve root shares a common branch from C5, and has a role in innervating many muscles of the rotator cuff and distal arm, including:
- Subclavius.
- Supraspinatus.
- Infraspinatus.
- Biceps Brachii.
- Brachialis.
- Deltoid.
- Teres Minor.
- Brachioradialis.
What muscle is innervated by C6?
The lower subscapular nerve (C5-C6) innervates teres major; and both the upper and lower subscapular nerves innervate the subscapularis, the third muscle of the rotator cuff apparatus. The thoracodorsal nerve (C6-C8), which also arises from the posterior cord, innervates the levator scapulae.
