Where is the Parasymphysis located?
Where is the Parasymphysis located?
The symphysis/parasymphysis region is the single central unit of the mandibular arch. Its lateral edges are determined by the roots of the lower canines and thus this region matches with the intercanine bone portion.
What is the Parasymphysis of the mandible?
When teeth are present, the fracture line passes between the mandibular central incisors. Fractures occurring in the area of the mandible from cuspid to cuspid, but not in the midline, are classified as parasymphyseal (as seen in the image below).
What is Subcondylar?
Subcondylar fractures are, by definition, below the attachment of the joint capsule and in general are devoid of ankylosis.
What is the classification of mandible?
A new classification for mandibular fractures
Class I | Single condyle |
---|---|
Class IIc | Class II and condyle |
Class III | Body/Parasymphysis/Symphysis |
Class IIIc | Class III and condyle |
Class IV | >1 fracture not including either condyle |
What is rigid fixation?
About Rigid Fixation Surgery Rigid fixation surgery refers to jaw surgeries in which plates and screws are used to assist in the repositioning of the structures of the mouth. Plates and screws can be used to stabilize the mandible (the lower jaw) or the maxillae (the palate/upper dental arch).
What is fracture mandible?
Mandibular fracture, also known as fracture of the jaw, is a break through the mandibular bone. In about 60% of cases the break occurs in two places. It may result in a decreased ability to fully open the mouth.
Why is there a line at the lower border of parasymphysis?
In the parasymphysis region, another line is drawn near the lower border to neutralize the tension forces, as torsional forces in the parasymphysis region are very high [1, 2].
How do you fracture the parasymphyseal region?
A sharp blow applied anteriorly often fractures the symphyseal/parasymphyseal region and the condyle region or regions. Blunt force applied broadly across the body of the mandible may also result in a fracture of the symphyseal/parasymphyseal region.
What is the difference between the parasymphysis and mandible?
In the mandible a line drawn at the base of the alveolar process corresponds to the line of tension and monocortical plates and screws can be fixed along this line. In the parasymphysis region, another line is drawn near the lower border to neutralize the tension forces, as torsional forces in the parasymphysis region are very high [1, 2].
What is the prevalence of symphysis/parasymphysis fractures?
Fractures of the symphysis/parasymphysis region account for approximately 10% of mandibular fractures, which makes this the fourth most common region to be fractured. A study by Morris et al found the proportion of various types of mandibular fractures (4143 fractures; 2828 patients) to be as follows: Angle (27%)
